Smoking is Injurious to Health

‘Smoking is injurious to health.’ But seldom do people pay heed to this warning notice on the cigarette packets. The injuries done by smoking to the body are numerous.

From the very moment the cigarette smoke reaches the heart of the smoker, it is not allowed to work harder. The pulse rate increases and the heart is not allowed to beat an extra 10 to 25 times per minute, accounting to 36,000 additional times per day. The heart beat becomes more irregular due to the irritating effect of nicotine and other components of tobacco smoke. This leads to cardiac arrhythmia ( and other serious coronary conditions like heart attack ( It is estimated that about 170000 heart attacks per year are caused due to Smoking addiction.

Smoking leads to an increase in blood pressure ( by around 10 to 15 percent resulting in an additional stress on the heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
