ME: Why are you so passionate about this?

JINJEE: The raw food diet has benefited me so much personally. I lost 45 lbs., got rid of a lump in my breast, and overcame depression, acne, candida and chronic fatigue.

I have seen it help so many people. And beyond all this, I think it is the only diet that will sustain the growing population of this planet! If everyone adopted a raw-vegan diet it would be beneficial in so many ways, cutting down on pollution, preventing deforestation, helping people to become more peaceful, making our countryside more beautiful, and solving our crime, healthcare and social security dilemmas. It will naturally be a very slow process, but I think that ultimately this will be the diet that helps us bring this planet to a state of light and life.

ME: What are the risks involved?

JINJEE: This is brand new territory. I mean, its been done sinse Pythagoras (who made his students do a raw food diet for a month before he would teach them so that their minds would be clear!), and Jesus (see http://www.essene.com for more information on Jesus' take on the raw food diet, from a biblical text that was removed from the bible!). But now for the first time the diet is becoming of interest to the mainstream of society. And nobody wants to spend any money to study it properly. So its like you have to take a leap of faith. Its for people willing to think for themselves and act on their own findings and studies. Some of the pitfalls are eating too many unsoaked nuts and dried fruit (hard on teeth), cutting out one of the three raw-vegan food groups completely for long periods of time, and worrying too much about whether you are getting enough nutrition. Of course you are! You are getting thousands of times more than you ever did before. But people can make you worry yourself sick. They just don't understand.

ME: Don't you get bored on the raw vegan diet?

JINJEE: There are 100s of different kinds of fruits and veggies. If you combine only two or three at each meal, then you can literally eat a different combination of foods at each meal for the rest of your life! Then your taste buds become very sensitive. And then you don't need to eat as much, so your body really uses all the food you eat, so you actually get hungry between meals - which is the best spice! Nothing tastes as good as simple food when you are truly hungry! I'd like to see restaurants add a "frescada" section to their menus, the way they now have "vegetarian" sections. I think Frescada sounds much nicer than Raw. But even now you can always have a salad or fruit salad and many restaurants also serve fruit smoothies.

You do have to eat a balanced diet. Our food groups are vegetables, nuts/seeds, and fruits. You should have approximately equal amounts of these in your diet. If you have your kids on the diet as I do, you have to make sure they eat a lot of bulk. A lot of fruits and veggies. And a lot of nutmilks from sprouted almonds and sunflower seeds. A variety of fruits and veggies. There's a wealth of information available online. If you decide to do this diet is it important to study it. I think of it as an extreme diet. There are extreme benefits such as a body that isn't subject to any of the common causes of death today, and longevity. But as with an extreme sport, you have to be prepared and trained, because there are potential dangers.

Me: Is this scientifically proven?

Jinjee: New scientific studies show that we should be living until at least 160 years of age. But we've been caught in this cooked food trap for many thousands of years since humankind first discovered the ease of hunting meat compared with growing things. And we lived on meat and it helped us survive in cold climates. And we learned that if we heated up foods it made the foods last longer which helped us survive the winters in cold climates. But the reason the foods lasted longer is because we killed them. We cooked them and this killed the enzymes in them.

Enzymes make the food ripen and enzymes make the food decay and go back to the earth after its season is passed. So cooking the food took that death out of it. However it also took the life out of it. So we got used to eating food with no life-force. But in today's society we are really fortunate because we are able to get fresh organic foods all year round! So there really is no longer any need to eat these dead denatured foods! Except that we are addicted to them. Toxins are highly addictive (toxins are what drugs, alcohol and cigarettes all have in common), and these foods are full of toxins!

What exactly IS the raw vegan diet?

It is a diet that consists of unheated and unprocessed fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds....everything preferably organic and as fresh as possible. I caught up with Jinjee Talifero, co-ordinator of the International Raw Vegan Network to answer my many questions.

Me: What is the raw vegan diet good for?

Jinjee: its not just that the diet doesn't contain toxins, but it is also extremely nutrient dense. In heated foods almonst all of the nutrients are destroyed or damaged. So when you eat an all-raw diet you are getting 1000's of times more nutrients than you would otherwise get! This very natural diet is what we'd all be eating if we weren't in "civilization" anway! So it makes a person seem supernaturally young, beautiful, fit, healthy, glowing, vital and energetic - as in the case of Demi Moore. But you have to realize that this is our natural state. Demi should be the norm for a 40-year young woman. We're now just comparing her to a society that is radically un-natural and unhealthy, where we eat about 90-100% cooked and processed (denatured) foods.

There's lots of raw recipes available from books and on the net, including raw gourmet cuisine. Why Raw?

Many people on a raw diet experience great improvements in physical and mental health, such as increased energy, improved skin quality, improved digestion, a greater connection with nature, less sleep required, a sturdier immune system.

Many people suffering from such serious conditions as cancer, diabetes and heart disease have healed themselves through eating raw foods.

Cooking destroys much of the food's life-force. Raw foods have a much higher nutritional value than foods that have been cooked. 70-85% of vitamins on average are destroyed in the cooking process.

Raw foods contain enzymes which enable the digestive organs to digest food efficiently, rendering its nutritional elements (especially the cell-building proteins) available to the body.

Enzymes are destroyed above 42C, so on a cooked diet the body has to work harder, putting more energy into digestion.

When one eats an orange, the wrapper (peel) becomes compost. When one follows a raw-plant-food lifestyle, the amount of trash produced by that individual decreases to almost nothing. Test for yourself and see.

An individual who eats the typical foods found in so-called "civilized society" who then changes to a raw-plant-food diet can discover energy they have never known. Eating a balanced mix of raw plant foods restores the body on a molecular level, building strong cells, radically naturalizing the body, raising alkalinity, and grounding the person in the natural world.

What is it that constitutes the basis of human nourishment?

All animals living in the wild eat their food raw and, almost always, fresh. Raw is Nature's First Law. Only humans and domesticated animals eat cooked and processed foods.

The cooking and processing of foods has become so common that most of us do not even question it. The assumption that cooked and processed foods are as good as raw foods is just an assumption. Most people do not know for sure, because they have never tried a balanced raw-food approach. Einstein once said: "The essential is to get rid of deeply rooted prejudices, which we often repeat without examining them."

Here is a visual experiment to consider: Feed a tribe of gorillas a diet of coffee, donuts, and other processed human foods for a few years. Let us watch what happens. Or consider, a herd of deer who, instead of eating their grass raw, decide to collect it and boil it in a giant cauldron. Picture what would happen in that situation!

Warm Brocolli and Tomato Salad


















Warm Brocolli and Tomato Salad

4 cups broccoli florets
2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
1 cup spinach
1/2 cucumber, diced
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tsp dried oregano

Very lightly steam the broccoli, until it is just tender
Mix all of the ingredients into a bowl, stirring in the lemon and olive oil
Season lightly and serve while the broccoli is still warm. Voila.

Alkalising Raw Soup

Serves 2

This is definitely a highly energising soup and is a big favourite while on a cleanse or detox. Contains avocado which is high in EFAs and cucumber which is well known for its cleansing properties. The taste of this soup can be dramatically altered by the use of the herbs and spices mentioned or by alternating between lemon and lime.

Ingredients:
1 avocado
2 spring onions
1/2 red or green pepper
1 cucumber
2 handfuls of spinach
1/2 clove of garlic
Bragg Liquid Aminos to taste
100ml of light vegetable Bouillon (yeast free)
Juice of 1 lemon or lime

Optional:
coriander,
parsley,
cumin.

Blend the avocado and stock to form a light paste, then add the other ingredients and blend.

Simple as that!

Liver Cleanse Recipe

This is an excellent liver cleanse recipe that I have adapted from about four or five other liver cleanse recipes that I have tried over the years. I have supercharged it with a few extra ingredients, but have put the main, base ingredients in bold to highlight the essentials.

I would recommend doing this over the weekend, and in the morning. It is particularly effective if you have undertaken some light exercise such as walking or jogging prior to the liver cleanse as this helps to get the toxins moving out of the body and invigorates the lymphatic system.

After the juice I would also recommend some breathing exercises to help the lymph flow on its way!

The Recipe for the Ultimate Liver Cleanse!

Serves 2
  • 2 large grapefruits
  • 4 lemons
  • 300ml of distilled water (or filtered)

Dressed to impress Asparagus


One is really simple, and really nice recipe. It makes a particularly good starter, or alternatively just place the asparagus on top of a nice healthy salad and put the dressing over both. Beautiful.
Serves 2Ingredients:
12 asparagus stems (bend towards the end and let them snap naturally, a la Jamie Oliver)8 spring onions2 tablespoons melted (avocado) butterGrated lemon peel of half a lemonFresh lemon juice of a whole lemonFresh thyme.

Directions:

Lightly steam the asparagus and spring onion together (for about 4 minutes or until as tender as you like - although remember, overcooking removes nutrients!). Then, mix together the avocado butter, lemon rind, juice and thyme to make a dressing. If it is too zingy, then add some cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil to neutralise the lemon a little. Now decoratively stack the asparagus and spring onion and dress. Voila!

Think of your body as a fish tank. Think of the importance of maintaining the integrity of the internal fluids of the body that we "swim" in daily. From my own experiences of healing as well as from reading many published reports it is obvious to me that a raw-food diet is not only the most natural but also the most effective nutritional measure for healing and rejuvenation. While only few will be strong enough to adopt a complete raw food diet for life, it will be good for everyone to have occasional periods on raw foods only.

At other times you may use the principles described in the following to increase the percentage of your daily raw food intake. By far the most important foods to be eaten raw are proteins and lipids (fats and oils); vegetables high in cellulose such as most leaves and stems are not suitable to be eaten raw, and may be juiced or cooked.

The main biochemical and nutritional advantages of raw food as compared to cooked food are:

� A higher vitamin and mineral content
� Minerals are largely present as biologically active colloids
� An abundance of helpful enzymes and bio-energy or life-force
� Proteins remain in their natural condition instead of being denatured
� The absence of digestive leukocytosis
� Polyunsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol do not become oxidized, and carcinogenic or atherogenic
� Glucose is absorbed more slowly, protecting the blood-sugar regulation
� There is no overweight or obesity on a raw-food diet
� As counted in calories, much less food is required
� Proven cleansing, rejuvenating and anti-cancer properties

Cooked Food Destroys Health

(a) Some of the nutrients are destroyed (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc.). Most conventional nutritionists agree.
(b) All the enzymes are destroyed. Enzymes are essential for proper digestion. Some enzymes speed up certain digestive processes a millionfold.

(c) The ratios of nutrients are changed. In the case of meat, relatively more vitamin B6 than methionine is destroyed, leading to atherogenic free-radical-initiating homocysteine accumulation. In other words, cooked meat causes heart problems. Cooked meat is also a carcinogen.

(d) Toxic substances are formed. More than 90 toxic substances have been identified that are formed when a potato is cooked. Some of these toxins are mutagenic and/or carcinogenic.
(e) Waste material is created.

(f) Cooking food has similar effects to the aging processes in the body. Cooking ages food very rapidly and very extensively.

(g) The water content of the food changes.
(h) The food's life-energy and life-information are destroyed.

What Happens to a Human Body That Eats Cooked Food

(a) There is a rush of white blood cells towards the digestive tract, leaving the rest of the body less protected by the immune system. From the point of view of the immune system the body is being invaded by toxins when cooked food is eaten.

(b) A general augmentation of white corpuscles in the blood and a change in the relative proportions of different blood cells. This phenomenon is called digestive leukocytosis.
(c) Because all the enzymes are destroyed by cooking, the food cannot be properly digested. In attempting to manufacture the requisite enzymes, an unnecessary burden is placed on the body.

It cannot manufacture all the necessary enzymes. The result is indigestion and sometimes ulcers. In general, raw food is so much more easily digested that it passes through the system in a half to a third of the time it takes for cooked food.

(d) The intestinal flora becomes putrefied (particularly from cooked meat), resulting in colonic dysfunction, allowing the absorption of toxins from the bowel. This phenomenon is variously called dysbacteria, dysbiosis, or intestinal toxemia (toxicosis).

(e) A build-up of toxins and waste material in many parts of the body, including within individual cells. Some of these toxins and wastes are called lipofuscin, which accumulates in the skin and nervous system, including the brain. It can be observed as "liver spots" or "age spots." It is an important aging process: general toxemia (toxicosis).

(f) Malnutrition at a cellular level. Because such a high proportion of cooked food consists of wastes and toxins, individual cells don't receive enough of the nutrients they need.(g) Tendency towards obesity through overeating. Because the cells don't get enough nutrients they are so to speak "always hungry" and hence "demand" more food.

(h) From time to time the body experiences detoxification crises (also called purification or healing crises). This happens when toxins are released through the skin or dumped in the bloodstream for elimination by the liver, kidneys, and other organs. The symptoms may include headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting, colds, bronchitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, etc.

(i) The body can become so toxic that all kinds of particles, such as pollen, can cause detoxification crises, called "allergies." About 80 million Americans suffer from such "allergies."
(j) The immune system, having to deal with the massive daily invasions of toxins, mutagens, and carcinogens eventually becomes overwhelmed and weakened. Another important aging process.

(k) Auto-immune diseases (arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis, gout, multiple sclerosis, etc.). Parts of the body become so clogged with toxins and wastes that the immune system starts regarding them as foreign invaders that must be destroyed - the body starts destroying itself. Another important aging process.

(l) Some of the waste material builds up in the arteries and clogs them leading to high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, strokes, etc. - killing nearly half of Americans.
(m) The toxins, mutagens, and carcinogens that build up within cells, eventually cause some cells to become cancerous - killing nearly a third of Americans.
(n) In general, many of the aging processes are accelerated by cooked food.

(People who switch to raw food often become visibly and physiologically younger.

FROMMER Associated Press WASHINGTON - The manufacturer of a herbicide that has been linked to frog deformities has spent $260,000 lobbying the Environmental Protection Agency and other government officials, an Associated Press review of disclosure forms shows. Syngenta Crop Protection, which makes the herbicide atrazine, enlisted former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole to meet with White House officials on at least one occasion. Dole represents the U.S. affiliate of Swiss-based Syngenta as well as the Kansas Corn Growers. In Minnesota this week, Democratic state Sen. John Marty, chairman of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, said he might push for a ban on atrazine, citing research that the chemical causes deformities in frogs and poses other health hazards. In August 2003, the U.S. affiliate of Swiss-based Syngenta Crop Protection hired Alston & Bird to lobby for the registration of atrazine, which had been challenged by environmental groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council. Dole, a special counsel at the firm, met with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin soon after to discuss the registration process. According to an Alston & Bird memo prepared before that meeting, which was obtained by the NRDC under the Freedom of Information Act, Alston & Bird said that EPA should reregister atrazine by Oct. 31, 2003. EPA did just that, concluding in a statement that it found no studies "that would lead the agency to conclude that potential cancer risk is likely from exposure to atrazine." Dole spokesman Mike Marshall said in a statement that Dole "is a credible voice for the Kansas Corn Growers and their coalition. Alston & Bird, which has experts in this type of work, has helped the Kansas Corn Growers and Syngenta with the re-registration process." He declined to answer specific questions about the lobbying effort. According to disclosure forms, Syngenta paid Alston & Bird $180,000 in lobbying last year and $80,000 in the first half of this year. Alston & Bird lobbied the EPA, the White House, the Justice Department and Congress during the 11-month period, the forms show. At Monday's Minnesota Senate hearing, University of California-Berkeley biologist Tyrone Hayes testified that low levels of atrazine "chemically castrate and feminize" male frogs, fish and other wildlife. Students first noticed deformed frogs in 1995 in a farm pond near Henderson, Minn. Other tests suggest that men who work near the chemical have a higher risk of prostate cancer, Hayes said, while others make a link between atrazine and cancer in laboratory animals. Atrazine was banned last year by the European Union, but Syngenta says the product is safe. EPA Plan to Study Pesticides' Effect on Kids Spurs Backlash Within Agency By Juliet Eilperin The Washington Post Sunday 31 October 2004 Poor families may join just to get the perks, staff fears. Washington - An Environmental Protection Agency proposal to study young children's exposure to pesticides has sparked a flurry of internal agency protests, with several career officials questioning whether the survey will harm vulnerable infants and toddlers. The EPA announced this month that it was beginning a two-year investigation, partially funded by the American Chemical Council, of how 60 children in Duval County, Fla., absorb pesticides and other household chemicals. The chemical industry funding initially prompted some environmentalists to question whether the study would be biased, and some rank- and-file agency scientists are now questioning whether the plan will exploit financially strapped families. In exchange for participating for two years in the Children's Environmental Exposure Research Study, which involves infants and children up to age 3, the EPA will give each family using pesticides in their home $970, some children's clothing and a camcorder that parents can keep. EPA officials in states such as Georgia and Colorado sent e-mail messages to each other last week suggesting the study lacked safeguards to ensure that low-income families would not be swayed into exposing their children to hazardous chemicals in exchange for money and high-tech gadgetry. Pesticide exposure has been linked to neurological problems, lung damage and birth defects. Suzanne Wuerthele, the EPA's regional toxicologist in Denver, wrote to her colleagues on Wednesday that after reviewing the project's design, she feared poor families would not understand the dangers associated with pesticide exposure. "It is important that EPA behaves ethically, consistently, and in a way that engenders public health. Unless these issues are resolved, it is likely that all three goals will be compromised, and the agency's reputation will suffer," she wrote in an e-mail obtained by the Washington Post. "EPA researchers will not tell participants that using pesticides always entails some risk, and not using pesticides will reduce that risk to zero." Troy Pierce, a life scientist in the EPA's Atlanta-based pesticides section, wrote in a separate e-mail: "This does sound like it goes against everything we recommend at EPA concerning use of (pesticides) related to children. Paying families in Florida to have their homes routinely treated with pesticides is very sad when we at EPA know that (pesticide management) should always be used to protect children." Linda Sheldon, acting administrator for the human exposure and atmospheric sciences division of the EPA's Office of Research and Development, said the agency would educate families participating in the study and inform them if their children's urine showed risky levels of pesticides. She said it was crucial for the agency to study small children, because so little is known about how their bodies absorb harmful chemicals. "We are developing the scientific building blocks that will allow us to protect children," Sheldon said, adding that the study design was reviewed by five independent panels of academics, officials of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and representatives of the Duval County Health Department. Families can remain in the study, even if they stop using pesticides, Sheldon said, as long as they were using them before the experiment started. It was unlikely that any family would volunteer for the study out of financial need, she added, because researchers will require parents to invest time in monitoring their children's activities and diet. "Nobody can go into this study just for that amount of money," Sheldon said. R. Alta Charo, a professor of bioethics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison's law and medical schools who co-wrote a National Academy of Sciences report last year on the use of pesticides for research, said EPA officials were struggling with how to balance the need to protect the individual child's interests against the goal of pursuing a broader scientific agenda. While she said the agency's approach was reasonable, Charo said it does raise ethical questions. "Where is the line between enticement and a godfather offer" that impoverished families would find hard to refuse? Charo said. "That is really troubling. We make these decisions over and over in public policy. This is one of those moments." Several EPA officials, all of whom asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation, also questioned why the agency removed the study design and its recruitment flyer from the EPA's Web site once some scientists started to complain about the project. Sheldon said the agency is rewriting how it portrays the research. "We removed it so we could modify it, so it would make more sense," she said.

Merck Tried to Bury Vioxx Concerns for Years Mon Nov 1, 7:25 AM ET NEW YORK (Reuters) - Internal e-mails and other documents from Merck & Co. show the company fought for years to keep safety concerns from undermining the drug's commercial prospects, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Vioxx, a drug known as a COX-2 inhibitor, was withdrawn from the market after it was shown to double the risk of heart attack and strokes in patients who had been taking it for at least 18 months. Vioxx generated some $2.5 billion in annual sales, and its withdrawal pummeled Merck's shares. On Monday, the Journal reported that an e-mail dated March 9, 2000, suggested Merck recognized that something in Vioxx was linked to increased heart risk.

Edward Scolnick, Merck research chief at the time, wrote in the e-mail that cardiovascular events "are clearly there" and called it a "shame." Although Scolnick compared Vioxx with other drugs with known side effects and wrote, "there is always a hazard," the company's public statements continued to reject the link between Vioxx and increased intrinsic risk.

Ted Mayer, a lawyer representing Merck, told the journal that the e-mails and marketing materials were "taken out of context" and "do not accurately represent the conduct of Merck and its employees." But a memorandum dated Nov. 21, 1996, by a Merck official illustrated that the company wrestled with Vioxx's potential to induce a cardiac event, the report said.

Another e-mail highlighted the possibility that patients could suffer blood clots unless they were also given aspirin. Those documents may be used in ongoing litigation against the company. On Friday, Merck -- citing documents that had been made public -- issued a statement saying that it acted "responsibly and appropriately" in developing and marketing Vioxx. It was not immediately clear if it was referring to those obtained by the Journal, and a company representative was not immediately available to comment early Monday.
